Depart after breakfast for the 2-hour journey along the edge of the Great Rift Valley and into the baobab-speckled woodland and grassland habitats of the Tarangire Ecosystem.
The Tarangire River meanders through the heart of the ecosystem, which has a diverse geological fingerprint encompassing nine vegetation zones interspersed with rocky outcrops and hills.
Game viewing is especially rich here during the dry season June-October when the river becomes the lifeline for all forms of wildlife, including elephant, zebra, buffalo, giraffe and there is a good chance of sighting lions and perhaps even leopard. Dinner and overnight at camp at close to Lake Manyara, Migombani campsite.
Today, we depart towards Lake Manyara National Park which although one of the smaller parks in Tanzania, also contains some of the most diverse habitats of all the Tanzanian parks with its towering mahogany trees and giant figs.
The varied ecosystem consists of groundwater forests, acacia woodland and open grassland along the lakeshore and sustains a wealth of wildlife, including lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, a variety of antelopes.
Lake Manyara National Park is famous for the elusive tree-climbing lions that inhabit the woodland between the lake and the Rift Valley. It is also an ornithologists’ paradise and is host to over 400 species of birds. Dinner and overnight at a camp, Migombani campsite.
After breakfast, collect lunch boxes and depart for Serengeti National Park. You arrive ready for an afternoon game drive in the park. The Serengeti is probably the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world.
Within its 15,000 sq km area it hosts 3 million large mammals. More than 35 species of plain animals – zebra, wildebeest, eland, giraffe, and others are found here. And so for the big five: elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, and rhino.
When travelling in peak migration season, you should be lucky enough to come across the herds moving back and forth around the central Serengeti zone as they head west and north in pursuit of rainfall and fresh green pasture. Dinner and overnight under tents in the Serengeti, Seronera campsite.
After a leisurely breakfast, go for one last morning game drive in the Serengeti. This will be a slow-paced game drive as you head out of the Serengeti and into the Ngorongoro Highland. A picnic lunch box will be provided.
Look out for the wildlife and Masaai homesteads along the way. You will arrive at your campsite, located at the age of the crater rim, in time for some rest, dinner and overnight at Simba campsite.
After breakfast, you depart for an amazing tour of the crater. The drive commences with the 600 m descent to the crater floor, a magnificent natural amphitheatre. Covering 260 sq. km, the crater is an attraction in its own right and is one of the wonders of the natural world.
The crater supports a year-round resident population of a variety of wildlife. You will have no trouble spotting lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and many species of plain animals – wildebeest, zebra, reedbuck, Thompson gazelle, and many more. A picnic lunch stop will be on the crater floor. Later in the afternoon, drive back to Arusha.
