This safari takes you to some of Africa’s best-kept wildlife secret: three of the southern Tanzania safari parks. Your safari starts with a visit to the majestic Selous Game Reserve, the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in the whole of Africa.
Selous, a UN World Heritage site, is a pristine wilderness of rolling savanna woodland, grassland plains with a network of lakes and rivers. You have the chance to view wildlife in a novel way, a classic game drive safari, walking safari, and a boat safari down the Rufiji River.
Then you head to Mikumi national park, the most accessible park from Dar es Salaam. Prominent features here are the Mikumi flood plain and the mountain ranges that rise on two sides of the park. And all the usual suspects of wild Africa have their home here, not to mention a few peculiar ones such as yellow baboons.
Before ending your south Tanzania safari with a hiking tour to the Udzungwa mountains national park, a hikers paradise containing Tanzania’s largest variety of primates.
What to Expect on this Safari to South Tanzania
Depart from Dar es Salaam by road for Selous game reserve, arrive in time for a short break before taking an evening boat safari on the mighty Rufiji River. This is a superb way of spotting wildlife especially in the dry season between June and October. Crocodiles, hippo, and various antelope species can be seen. After breakfast, pack your picnic lunch in readiness for a full-day tour of the Selous game reserve. Selous occupies an area larger than Switzerland and is the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in the whole of Africa.
You will find an amazing concentration of wildlife including elephant, lion, buffalo, crocodile, hippo, and wild dog. Other species resident here is zebra, baboon, giraffe, greater kudu, baboon, bushbuck, and impala. Dinner and overnight: Selous Jimbiza Camp.
0700 hrs – go for an early morning walking tour, this is a perfect way of coming up close with nature out of the confines of a car, returning to the camp for brunch and a drive to Mikumi.

After breakfast, pack your picnic lunch in readiness for a full-day tour of the Mikumi national park; visit the Mkata Chamgore and Mkata flood plain within Mikumi National Park, these are areas rich in wildlife. Stop for a picnic lunch and later continue with the game viewing until late afternoon.
You will encounter elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest, eland, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. lion and wild dogs are among the carnivores common here. Towards the southern end of the flood plain live families of yellow baboon. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Many are Eurasian migrants who stay between October and April. After breakfast, drive to the Udzungwa mountains. Meet your guide and head out to the Sanje waterfalls. It is about 3 to 4 hours hiking through the green forest. Expect to see monkeys; including rare Iringa red Colobus and some very old and really long trees; some more than 200 years old. Explore the tropical forest till late afternoon. Return to camp for dinner and overnight: Mikumi Camp Bastian.
After a leisurely breakfast, go for one last safari in the Mikumi national park until 11:00 am before driving back to Dar es Salaam. Your driver will drop you at your hotel in Dar es Salaam.
