You have the chance to view wildlife in a novel way while sailing down the Rufiji River.
Then you head to Mikumi, where all the usual suspects of wild Africa have gathered, not to mention a few peculiar ones such as yellow baboons.
Then end your South Tanzania safari adventure with a visit of the unspoiled Ruaha, home to thousands of elephants and numerous plain animals and the predators that follow them – lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog and jackal.
What to Expect on this Safari to South Tanzania
Depart by road from Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve, making it for lunch at Selous Jimbiza lodge. At 1500 hrs, enjoy an evening boat safari on the Mighty Rufiji River.
The lifeblood of the Selous is the Rufiji River and a boat safari down the river is a novel way of seeing the wildlife. This is a superb way of spotting wildlife especially in the dry season between June and October. Crocodiles, hippo, and various antelope species can be seen. After breakfast, you will enjoy a full day game drive in Selous Game Reserve. Selous Game Reserve occupies an area larger than Switzerland and is the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in the whole of Africa. This UN World Heritage site is a pristine wilderness of rolling savanna woodland, grassland plains with a network of lakes and rivers.
Selous Game Reserve is home to an amazing concentration of wildlife including elephant, lion, buffalo, crocodile, hippo, and wild dog. Other species resident here is zebra, baboon, giraffe, greater kudu, baboon, bushbuck, and impala. Dinner and overnight: Selous Jimbiza Lodge.
Depart Selous Game for Mikumi National Park, prominent features of the park are the Mikumi flood plain and the mountain ranges that rise on two sides of the park.
Mikumi National Park is home to buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, zebra, and python. The drive to Mikumi will take you through farms along the Uluguru Mountains and villages arriving at your lodge in the evening. Dinner and overnight: Camp Bastian Mikumi.
Full day Safari in Mikumi national park; visit the Mkata Chamgore and Mkata flood plain within Mikumi National Park, these are areas rich in wildlife. Stop for a picnic lunch and later continue with the game viewing until late afternoon.
You will encounter elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest, eland, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Lion and wild dogs are among the carnivores common here. Towards the southern end of the flood plain live families of yellow baboon. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Many are Eurasian migrants who stay between October and April. Depart before sunrise for Ruaha National Park. You arrive in time for lunch at Ruaha Hill Top Lodge. At 1500 hrs go for an evening game drive in the park.
Ruaha National Park is an unspoiled wildlife park in central Tanzania. It occupies 10,000 sq km and carries 8000 tuskers making it the biggest elephant sanctuary in the country. The Great Ruaha River with its spectacular gorges flows along the parks’ eastern border and is host to hippo and crocodile. The river is the park’s lifeblood and provides drink for waterbuck, reedbuck, and buffalo. This, in turn, attracts the predators: lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog and jackal. After breakfast, pack your picnic lunch in readiness for a full-day tour of the Ruaha National Park, the only protected area in which the flora and fauna of eastern and southern Africa overlap. On this day, you may see Roan and Sable antelope, hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, reedbuck, giraffes and buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog, jackal and a variety of bird species. After breakfast, go on a morning game drive in Ruaha. Return to the lodge for a hot lunch before driving to Iringa Town for dinner and overnight: Neema Craft Hotel.
After a relaxing morning and hot breakfast, you will take a detour to the Isimila Stone Age Site, famous after the discovery of Stone Age tools and fossilized bones that were discovered in 1951, before departing for Dar es Salaam. You will arrive late in the evening.
